सूरमा जी हमारे पडोसी हैं। एक दिन उन्होंने हमें चाय पर बुलाया। सूरमा जी एक प्राइवेट फर्म में लिपिक के पद पर थे, लेकिन घर उन्होंने बड़ा अच्छा सजा रखा था। दो दो एयर कंडीशनर , गीजर ; वाह जी वाह! बातों ही बातों में राजनीती की चर्चा शुरू हुई, अरविन्द केजरीवाल और मुकेश अम्बानी का ज़िक्र आया। सूरमा जी बोले “सब के सब चोर हैं, मुकेश अम्बानी को देख लो, देश को नुकसान पहुंचाता है, जिसे हम देश का गौरव समझते थे वो ही चोर निकला।” मैंने भी पनीर खाते हुए अपनी सहमति जताई।

खाने के बाद चाय का सिलसिला शुरू हुआ, मैंने चाय की चुस्की के साथ सूरमा जी से पुछा “सूरमा जी ये तो बताइए दो दो एयर कंडीशनर का खर्चा कैसे उठाते हैं”|

सूरमा जी बड़े गर्व के साथ बोले “वो जी कुछ नहीं डॉक्टर साहब! बस शाम होते ही मीटर पर मैगनेट रख देते है, इलेक्ट्रॉनिक मीटर खुद-ब-खुद बंद हो जाता है।”

मेरी चाय ख़तम हो चुकी थी और मैं सूरमा जी के इन वचनों को सोचता हुआ उठा ” सब के सब चोर हैं”|

ಬರೆಯಲು ಬಾರದು, ಬರೆಯಲೂ ಬಾರದು ನೋಡಿ
ಒಂದಕ್ಷರ ಕೂಡ ಇಂಥ ಘಳಿಗೆ
ಇಳಿದಿಳಿದು ಲಾವದ ಹಾಗೆ ಹೆಪ್ಪುಗಟ್ಟಿದ ನೋವು
ತಣ್ಣಗೆ ಕೊರೆವಾಗ ಒಳಗೆ

ಮಾತು ಬಲಹೀನ, ಮೌನ – ಹಬ್ಬುತ್ತಿದೆ
ಏನು ಮಾಡಲಿ ಆರ್ತಜೀವ
ಬೆಂಕಿನಾಲಗೆ ಚಾಚಿ ಸುಡುವ ಪ್ರೇಮದ ಕಾವು,
ಒಳಗೆಲ್ಲ ಶೂನ್ಯಭಾವ.

ನನ್ನ ಪದಗಳಿಗಿಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವ ಬೆಲೆ, ಏನು ನೆಲೆ,

ಕತೆ,ಕವಿತೆ,ಲಾವಣಿಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕುವಂಥಹುದಲ್ಲ
ಗಾಳದೆರೆಹುಳು ; ಸುತ್ತ ನೀರು
ಹಬ್ಬಿ ಹರಡಿದ ದುಃಖವನ್ನು ತಲೆಯಲಿ ಹೊತ್ತು
ಕೆಸರಲುಬ್ಬಸ ಪಡುವ ಬೇರು

ಎಳೆದ ಹಗ್ಗದ ಗುರುತು, ಇಳಿವ ನೆತ್ತರ ಮರೆತು
ಓಡುವಂತಿದೆ ಎಳಸು ಕಾಲು
ಅಪ್ಪಿ ಹಿಡಿದರೆ ಸಾಕು, ಉಬ್ಬಿ ಬರುವುದು ಕೊರಳು
ಊಡದಿರು ಮಾತ್ರ ವಿಷಹಾಲು

ಕಣ್ಣ ತೊಟ್ಟಿಂದ ತೊಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಇಳಿದಿದೆ ನೀರು
ಸುಡುವ ಕೆನ್ನೆಯನೊಮ್ಮೆ ಒರೆಸು
ಗರಿ ಸುಟ್ಟ ಗುಬ್ಬಚ್ಚಿಯಂತೆ ಬೇಡುವೆ ನಿನ್ನ
